A Notary Public is a person appointed by a Provincial Government. The primary role of a Notary Public is to serve as a witness when important documents are being signed. Such signatures must be done in person and the Notary Public will attest that they witnessed the signature by signing the document and affixing their seal.

Matters requiring notarized documents can be related to passports, estate matters, deeds, powers-of-attorney, foreign and international business (import/export documents) as well as many other government related services requiring official documents.

What you’ll need:

• Your documents (of course). Photocopies must be accompanied by originals. Also, please read the individual description of services for any special requirements on certain documents (travel letters for example). Documents that need extensive corrections, are incomplete, or need to be redrafted are subject to drafting fees.

• Identification: You will need to have two government issued (Federal or Provincial) pieces of identification. The first must be a photo ID with your address (Health Cards do not qualify). Used together with the second piece of ID, I basically need to see your photo, your address, your signature and your date of birth to establish your identity. Examples of acceptable ID include, Provincial Driver’s License, Passports, Permanent Resident Card, Citizenship Card, First Nations Card, Age of Majority Cards (e.g. the Ontario Photo Card), Health Card (as a second piece of ID only), Government Employee Photo Cards, etc.

Price:

• The fee for a basic notarization at a location of your choice (e.g. your workplace, home or coffee shop/restaurant) is $53.10 + $6.90 HST= $60.00.
